ABOUT DRINKING

Drinking is fun, you get to hang out with your friends, talk, have “Nyama Choma”, and perhaps even dance… a few drinks may help one to relax, meet new people and make parties merrier. It is often a part of life.
But too much alcohol can ruin relationships, result in careless behavior, and create an embarrassment of a
lifetime. It can cause hangovers
, health complications, even death.
If drinking alcohol is at the same time fun and dangerous, what is the limit? Why do people start to drink? How do we say no to alcohol and avoid crossing the line? How do we make sure we stay in control?
Why do people start drinking?
Pear pressure: Most people start drinking during their youth, when peer pressure comes into play. They often see their friends drinking alcohol and may copy them, thinking it is the cool thing to do. Also, most drinking friends begin to pressure the non-drinkers to start drinking.
Curiosity: Curiosity, they say, killed the eat, and it sure does get lots of youth into taking alcohol, if you do not drink but you are always surrounded by friends who drink, you may take a sip from a friend’s glass just to taste and try, before you know it you are hooked.
To reduce stress and relax: For some people, drinking is a way to reduce tension and relax thus some people take up drinking whey they are faced with problems but remember, the memories of embarrassing behavior and hangover last longer and are more stressful that the few relaxing hours you had when you were drunk. And the problems are still there when you get sober.
To feel older (kujisikia umekua): You have hit the 18 age mark, you can now vote and of course you can drink! Unfortunately, most youth are more eager to drink after their 18th birthday than to vote! It makes them feel older
Why you should not drink alcohol?
Not allowed: Anyone under 18 is not allowed to drink. If you are in school you shold definitely not drink. You risk being expelled from school if you caught drinking or appear drunk on school grounds.
Looking stupid: You may think drinking alcohol is a cool and mature thing to do, but the embarrassment you feel the next day for your uncontrolled behavior while you were drunk may leave you feeling like a big jerk.
Being taken advantage of: Most of time, you don’t know what you are doing when you are drunk, so someone may take advantage of you either sexually without you offering any resistance which is bad or recording your bad action. You may end up contracting STDs or worse, HIV and get unwanted pregnancies for girls.

**Kumbuka!
